Book Overview

The Los Angeles Times calls it a brilliant collection of stories . . . that strike at the heart. . . . Houston claims for women the terrain staked out by male writers from Hemingway to Richard Ford. Here are 12 shrewd and funny stories about smart women looking for the love of a good man, and men who are wild and hard to pin down.

Best book!

All I have to say is this is a great book for any lady - single or not, you can learn a lot about yourself from these short stories. Very happy with my reading selection!

cowboys are my weakness, Pam Houston

I first heard a story from this book on NPR. Sometimes it is so much fun to discover a writer, a female writer, that has enough courage to describe in detail, one of the weaknesses so many of us share ... "Bad Boys." I enjoyed this book and will look for more by Pam Houston. I wonder why her books are not on audible CDs. She is a natural.

Strong writing, strong voice, strong & weak women

I'd enjoy meeting the people who didn't enjoy this collection of strong, entertaining stories. Houston has a good ear for language and the emotions she evokes with her rythmns. She is good at writing about strong women who make bad choices out of weakness, and weak women who make strong choices out of fear. My 30-year old husband devoured this book, as did my 19-year old female neice (who only reads soccer magazines). It's not just a Gen-X chick thing as some may say. This is Pam Houston at her strongest! (If you loved it, stay with it, steer clear of "Waltzing the Cat".)

A Satisfying Read!

This is book is made up of a series of short stories. Central to each story is a woman; bold, reflective, confident, vulnerable and brave.I loved Houston's crisp and clean writing style. She uses her words economically but with panache. This is one of the best books I have read in a long time. The short story format make it convenient for travel reading.

If you can relate, you'll love it!

As a twenty-something, nature-loving woman who is strong enough to not NEED a man even though I WANT one, I loved this collection. Pam Houston nailed it. Her insights are fantastic. Ten out of the twelve stories are written in first person, and that character changes little, so if you can relate to her, the whole collection is a treat. If you don't like one story, you probably won't like any of them. As you can see from the wide range of reviews here, it isn't everyone's cup of tea, but if you love the outdoors and relationship talk that lacks whine, you'll eat it up.
