A Very good reference for other than fashionable clothing

Most costume books detail aristocratic fashion, and this book is a welcome change. These are costumes usually of lower-ranking people. There are some exceptions, given the overlap between costuming in higher status servants and young gentlewomen; a German noble is shown, but perhaps that is because he is dressed to act as a judge. The professional classes are represented: alderman, lawyer, merchant, etc., but the costumes are chiefly for servants (sometimes grandly dressed servants) and working class people. As one might expect, lower class clothing is represented in more detail as one gets closer to the present, and Euro-American costume is added to European costume after the beginning of colonization. The costumes are shown in clear, detailed black line drawings, two to a page. They are accompanied by detailed captions listing hair, headdress, garments, hose, shoes and accessories as appropriate. The sections are broken into years, not necessarily the same in all cases. Each is proceeded by a well-organized several page discussion of the generalities of the era. The book includes an introduction and glossary. A good choice for someone who wants something other than aristocratic fashion and a good addition to most costume collections.
