I use the second through sixth grade levels of this series as differentiated homework for my fifth grade students. The book is divided into several units that include a reading passage, comprehension questions, and a study skill. The units range from four pages in the second grade book to over ten pages in the sixth grade book. The study skills include such topics as using a dictionary, revising a writing passage, finding subject and predicate, using quotation marks, or matching words and their meanings. My students are able to complete a unit in a week's time. Steck Vaughn has done a good job of leveling the material. The directions are consistent between levels, so once you have taught a procedure students should be able to complete subsequent tasks independently. My students look forward to the interesting reading passages. The comprehension questions range from basic recall to more challenging inferential questions. The book includes a scoring guide and grading is fairly easy as most tasks are choose an answer or fill in the blank. These books would also make good home school materials.
