Panicked? GET THIS BOOK!

With my husband's diagnosis of renal failure, dialysis, and future transplant also came the nastiest diet restrictions imaginable. I was losing my mind trying to keep track of sodium, phosphorous, potassium, carbs, and protein while cooking for him - until I got this book. I've been carryiing it around with me constantly since I got it a few weeks ago. It does a much better job of explaining the diet restrictions than any dietician we talked to. The recipes are easy and use mostly common ingredients. My only complaint with the recipes is that there are few grab 'n' go, crock pot, or sack lunch options. (My husband's renal failure hasn't caused our children to slow down - yet, and he's still working.) I wish we had been handed this book the day he left the hospital so we wouldn't have been so terrified of eating for the first few weeks after he was diagnosed. I haven't tried all the recipes yet, but the ones I've made so far are like "real food" and much more satisfying than the white rice and canned peaches we were limiting ourselves to initally. I especially appreciated the breakfast, lunch, and dinner menu options that were given.

Buy this book.

This translates the dialysis food lists of do's and don't into actual meals with nutrition information (potassium, sodium, phosphorous etc). There are doable, "normal" recipes for all meals of the day including desert. So glad I found this book!

Great Cookbook for "Normal" comfort foods

I bought many renal cookbooks (well, as many as I could find) and this is my favorite. I am cooking for my 69 year old father and he most enjoys the common comfort foods. The stew recipe as well as the stuffed peppers are his favorites so far. The comfort foods help with his minimal appetite (he will eat them even though he does not feel hungry). Thanks SO much. This cookbook really helped.

David's recipes

I recently order "Cooking for David) and find it the best and most informative cookbook regarding renal disease cooking. The recipes are encellent, easy to make, and provide a variety of selections. The cookbook is so good that I ordered one for my daughter-in-law because she keep asking for the recipes. Since my husband is going on dialysis, the recipes have prepared me in advance to be able to cook for him and provide him with good and balance meals. There are wonderful charts that let you know just what foods are good and which ones to avoid. I have read the book from cover to cover and its become my bible for cooking. I wish to thank these wonderful ladies for creating this fantastic cookbook.

This book changed our lives!

This is a wonderful book. For 6 years my mother, a kidney patient, has been preparing bland meals for herself. This year she moved in with us (family of five). Since then, I have been preparing two meals at dinnertime--a bland one for her and the usual meal for my other family members. My mom felt guilty about my preparing two sets of meals and the other members of the family felt bad about eating their more tasty meals at the same time that she ate. I did not mind cooking two meals but it was difficult for me to co-ordinate the meals. This book explains the renal diet very well and provides recipes for tasty foods all my family members like. I especially appreciate the accompanying list of nutritional contents (including sodium, potassium, phosphorous) for each recipe. I only wish we had known about this book before.
