Book Overview

Maybe he would not have gone through it if he had it to do all over again. It sounded funny saying to do it all over again when it was only about a year. Yet, this year was truly the loneliest time in his life. In the past, there was someone special who could take away the burn that would begin to churn in his heart. But not this year. This was one that had only dry tear ducts that ached in a closed cake. Through the thoughts and dreams of...

hypnotic, introspective novel

this was a great book --- thru his main character, the author unfolds a deeply personal story in a direct, very literal fashion -- the author includes the height of the characters he is introducing, for example. however, the overall feeling of the novel is almost otherwordly, strongly conveying the main character's sadness and alienation. i'm guessing the author had a story he wanted to get outside of himself and onto the pages of a book. now that he's cleared himself of that, i look forward to a second work with a more objective focus and story line.

Look Inside Yourself

John Toker is a tutor for writing and math with a specialty in helping learning disabled students. He is also a psychotherapist interested in discovering the spirituality in healing. His first novel, Conflicting Sanity, is based on experiences from his practice and situations which real patients endured. Through the thoughts, dreams, and actions of his protaganist, Frank Thomas, the reader vicariously soul searches for his own sanity. John offers insightful advice on having friends and family support with all medical situations and encourages the use of drawing and art as a way of understanding our deepest self. This is a very interesting look through the keyhole of our medical system and the people who inhabit the halls. The book makes you think and gives you a deeper understanding of our psyche. A Look on the Dark Side

This book validates the dictum that one should write about what one knows best. This dark psychological novel amply reflects the author's familiarity with the field of psychotherapy, and could almost serve as a technical treatise on psychotherapy and some of the debates in the field. In fact, one might question the author's decision to make the book a work of fiction, since I would rate it more highly as a technical treatise than as a literary work. However that may be, this is a deep and sensitive look into the mental states of both the protagonist, Frank Thomas, and his patients.

Conflicting Sanity

Let me start by saying this is the first book I've read cover to cover in many years! I found the writing to be very inviting in the sense that I found myself caught up in the emotional rollercoast ride that Mr. Toker takes us as readers through with his characters; especially Frank Thomas. The details really paint a clear picture of what it must be like to work in the medical field. It was a triumphant ride as Mr. Toker takes his main character Frank Thomas from challenge to challenge and finally to a small glispe of enlightenment. A triumphant ride for Mr. Toker, Frank Thomas and we the readers! A wonderful read hard to put down.
