Not a horrible read.

The author did a wonderful job making this normally dry material easy to understand. I bet he's good looking too.

Fit for Purpose

If you wish to employ a Juniper/Netscreen Firewall out of the box tyhen this is the book to buy. Together with Junipers own documentation it will form a good basis for studying for certification. I can't quite understand what Mr Uphill Gardener found wrong with this book as it does do what it sets out to do and achieves its aims. His review seems as substantial as the rest of his reviews (?) check them out.

Outstanding

This book provides in-depth explanation of firewall fundamentals, principles, concepts and instruction. Comparable to a $3,000 instruction class. It speaks to the novice and advanced reader. Money well spent.

Great Entry-Level Book for Learning Netscreen Firewalls

Configuring Netscreen Firewalls by Syngress Publishing is a great entry-level book for learning how to configure and deploy Netscreen firewalls in the real world. Although there were a few technical and grammatical errors in the book, the authors did a superb job of introducing the reader to the world of Netscreen and ScreenOS. Considering the fact that there are no other books out there focusing entirely on Netscreen Firewalls (besides the NCSA/NCSP literature from Juniper), I would highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a technical resource on the Juniper Netscreen firewall product line.

I just got this book second week of January, 2005. This review is written after using the book for one week. I have been using NetScreen 5GT's for about one year. The book covers all the important topics for using the NetScreen OS. The value of the book is fantastic compared to a consultant at $175 to $200 per hour (US dollars). If you are new to using Netscreen, the book will save lots of time understanding and setting up a OS configuration. The chapters are setup in a very logical way. The writing and examples are easy to understand and follow. The authors have done a better job than the "official" NetScreen documentation, in creating a book that makes it possible to quickly learn the NetScreen technology. The list of authors contains the exact type of people you would want to ask a hundred questions of, for setting up a new Netscreen: independent Security Consultants and system engineers who work for Netscreen. (Those hundred questions are answered in this book). Here is the ultimate compliment I can give the book, to me it is worth more the twice the price I paid for it.
