Great Textbook Approach To Learning About Computers!

     Marilyn Meyer and Roberta Baber have teamed up to write Computers Today and Tomorrow to offer a textbook approach to learning about computer history, theory, applications, basic programming, teleconferencing, and other forms of technology. They express throughout the book the application of computer technologies to fulfill a variety of tasks society places upon them today, such as in areas of business, education, medicine, science, shopping, and transportation.     The authors encourage computer literacy beyond simply knowing which keys to press. They also demonstrate the far-reaching impact that computers have made upon the lives of people today, of all ages from all walks of life. A good treatment of computer history is provided. The photographs published in the book speak well for themselves. Having a good look at them should generate within everyone appreciation that we have more efficient computers working for us today!     The book places emphasis upon how computers work and how they can be put to use, rather than providing actual hands-on programming (hundreds of books already do this!). Every aspect of computer technology to date is covered, including how computers, hardware devices, and standard software programs operate. Information about communications and the Internet is especially helpful as computers have brought many people together. An excellent 27-page glossary of computer and technical terms is provided, one of the best I've seen in a while.     Computers have come a long way in development and their roles in society are becoming more profound every day. This book will create a greater appreciation for the existence and use of computers today and will plant seeds of interest for the future. The book is ideal for formal classroom use and for general reading by those desiring to know more about computers. It is well structured and colorfully illustrated. Each chapter is a self-contained lesson. The entire book a well-rounded course. The CD that accompanies the book provides tutoring and other helps to reinforce the instruction provided in the book. A very user-friendly approach to learning!

Excellent overview of most things computer related.

1. Great for people who use computers but don't really know what goes on behind the scenes. 2. Is incredibly helpful in getting you familiar with the basic technical jargon that facilitates understanding of more complicated stuff. 3. Nice structure and organization that follows a logical progression of events. 4. Lots of helpful illustrations, informative sidebars, and pictures that break the monotony of a pure text page. SUMMARY: If you are interested in computers and don't really know much in-depth stuff - then this book is for you. If you are a computer junkie - then you may find the mateiral too basic.
