Sider's intention is to "articulate a consistent pro-life stance on public policy issues that flows from a biblical definition of life." He begins with guidelines and questions about what and how moral issues should be legislated in the political arena. Most of the book focuses on abortion, economics, sexuality, feminism and the family, and nuclear weapons. he briefly discusses the tobacco industry, alcoholism, racism, environmental destruction, and other topics that need further attention. Sider fully embraces a biblical feminist position. His commitment to women's rights shines throughout the book, especially in his treatment of economics and the family. He gives much attention to ways in which women have been discriminated against in the workplace, the home and current divorce laws. He calls men to accountability for their hyper-individualism in putting career above family. While Sider clearly takes a stand against abortion, it is no head-in-the-sand mentality. He calls for honest struggle with pro-choice arguments and genuine empathy with women who consider or have chosen abortion. He recognizes male sexual irresponsibility as a significant factor in the rise of abortions, and challenges men to fidelity. The acid test of the pro-life movement should be to work as hard for programs enhancing quality of life to the already living as to work for policies ensuring life to the not yet born. As Christians continue their involvement in political change, Sider's challenge to us is to demonstrate integrity and fairness, respecting differences, but not stereotyping. Published with the staff of Evangelical for Social Action, this hard hitting, thorough book should raise discussion and build bridges.
