A strong, beautiful third part of the Jessie trilogy

Come Home Jessie is the third book in the trilogy, the story of Jessie, a black Labrador retriever, and the boy Matt, who saved and loved her. For whatever reason, I liked A Home for Jessie (#1) and Come Home Jessie much better than the second book, Please Save Jessie. I'd definitely recommend them first. In Come Home Jessie, the unlucky Labrador has the misfortune of being trapped in a car when three men steal it. Afraid that she might give them away after they ditch the car, they beat and abandon her. Jessie loses her memory and wanders around trying once again to get home, with a little help from a well-meaning but snippy old couple.Strangely enough, it's not hard to suspend disbelief enough to say, "Sure, I buy it that Jessie has once again been the unluckiest dog in the world." Mostly Pullein-Thompson, again, does a good job of identifying with the poor dog, especially when she is injured and scared. She also gets more into the human characters in this book: Matt's fear; his friend Anne's steady calm; and his parents, who are unfortunately very stressed out with their own lives, to the point that Matt thinks they don't care about Jessie.Jessie's son Jasper, the willful, wild puppy, also plays a bigger role in Come Home Jessie. He's usually hard to control and too strong to fight, making him hard to get close to - Jessie is such a gentle dog and always has been. But he proves that he is able to be trusted when he finds his mother in the dark. It would be interesting to see Pullein-Thompson write a book from Jasper's point of view. Also grazed on is the strong reminder to never leave your pet alone in a car on a hot day. Forget about the car and your dog being stolen. Worry about the dog overheating.
