These poems are largely in the nature of fables, fables without morals. If philosophy were not in such ill repute and so devoid of humor, they might be called philosophic poems for they tend to excite and to irritate intelligence rather than sentiment. But if the passion of the brain has been preeminently stressed, neither has the passion of the heart been neglected, nor the love of truth--the Fata Morgana.
