Continues the excellence!

Allred follows up her excellent first book with a second installment. I loved this one as much as the first one which is not something you can say very often. I hope she continues the series.

Close Contact was an Excellent Read!

Short review: Wow, Close Contact, Alien Affairs, Book 2, was an excellent book! I loved this heroine and I loved how she muttered or thought about kicking the butt of the heroine from Book 1!

better than average futuristic romance

This was a good, solid futuristic romance but I liked her previous book, Close Encounters a lot more. The heroine in the first story was more focused, independent and noble. (I loved the courageous heroine in the first book and the story was more complex for me.) The heroine (Echo Adams) in this book fights doing her job as diplomat. She wants to return to a life of partying and resents being pulled to work for the government. This book focuses more on the heroine's development from somewhat whiny and spoiled to a person who wants to make a difference. As a result it took me a while to warm up to the heroine. She seemed kind average even if she did have special powers. I think her general immaturity and the more predictable plot make it a good futuristic story but not a fantastic one. (While the first book felt more a Sci Fic with a wonderful romance. This is book seems to be more romance than Sic Fic. story.) Overall this is a better than average futuristic romance.

Pleasantly surprised

This series is reminiscent of Robert Heinlein's "Friday". It involves genetically enhanced women who are a part of an organization that protects sentient life on planets from corporate / alien adverse interference. I was pleased with the story and its evolution and even though this is a romance, it contained a great deal of story content and development as far as the science fiction aspects. I look forward to reading future stories from this author.

satires the kick male butt heroine phenomena

Genetically enhanced person Echo Adams is not a typical GEP. She was gifted with a rare Psi ability, which makes her perfect on her current diplomatic assignment as an emissary in the Alien Affairs office. Echo is disturbed when she is ordered out of the office to perform field work; as she does not do stinky outdoor work; especially when others might shoot you. Still she is considered the only person capable of handling the powerful Daughter Stone of the Limantti species that has been stolen. Accompanied by Peri the dragon bird and using her Psi skills to follow the thieves' trail leads Echo to Madrea; a planet in which the ruler has severed all relationships with the Federation and outlawed technology. Echo understands the mission is to retrieve the Daughter Stone, get out alive and not cause a King to ignite in fury. Her only hope of success is with Royal Commander Reynard. The second Alien Affairs science fiction romance (see Close Encounters) is a jocular affair that satires the kick male butt heroine phenomena as this lead female prefers the air conditioned office in which choosing what to eat for lunch is an adventure rather than off planet field encounters of a deadly kind. Fast-paced, fans who enjoy a fun somewhat simplistic lampooning of the super heroine sub-genre will want to read Close Contact as Echo Adams is promised a lot, but nothing until the end is met; as her amusing asides throughout will attest.
