Decision analysis from the viewpoint of a cardiologist
Published by Thriftbooks.com User , 22 years ago
While this book was published in 1980 the principles of this book remain valid even more today then yesteryear. With the increasing complexities facing us in cardiology, the sound methodology in this book provides one with an excellent resource for informed clinical practice. The exercises are valid even today but require the addition of many levels of complexities as we try to incorporate the risk reductions from individual and meta-analyses of clinical trials. Chapters 1 to 3 set the scene and introduce you to the use of trees, and gradually build on this by the use of information to modify the probabilities at each junction of the tree in chapter 4 to 8. Chapter 9 details the use of decision analysis in practice while chapter 10 provides some food for thought discussing limitations and ethics of these approaches. For those preparing to use this book as a stepping stone to integrate clinicak analysis skills into their practice this is an essential primer to read and digest and to be able to teach before moving on to newer texts that also discuss the use of computer programmes now available for this process. No doubt such programmes will be readily available for Palm Pilots and Psions to be carried on the wards and in the future patients may use them to decide which physician they would prefer to be seen / intervened on by.
