I have only read this book in French, but It is terrific! It not only reminds us of the Nuclear Bomb scare in the 1980s, but also of the curiousity of children. By the author's name, I assume it was originally written in French, so if you have a good understanding of the French language, I recommend reading the French version entitled "Surréal 3000."
One of the best children's science fiction books.

I am a teacher and used this book abour 15 years ago with my students. They loved it. Since then, I have tried to find other science fiction books that would be appropriate for fifth graders and have had a difficult time. If anyone has suggestions, please let me know.
A Wonderful Memory from my Childhood.

I recently came across this book again, at the public library of my childhood.I was only in this small town for the weekend. I had not laid eyes on the book for over three decades. They let me borrow it for the weekend, and it brought back wonderful memories. I can't wait to buy it in reprint, so that my future grandchildren can read it. Technology has brought us so far, but the magic is still in this well written book of my childhood.
One of my favorite young adult books - in 1968

I'm looking to find a copy for my children; this was one of those magical books I read over and over in the library when I was, say, 10 years old; in the aftermath of a catastrophic event (nuclear war?), survivors' descendants live their lives underground... I can't really remember much more... I hope I can find it some day. (Other masterful magical books: Golden Goblet, Follow My Leader, and Wrinkle In Time!)
Great children's book

This was the first book I ever read. I remember still (after 30+ years) going to the library, choosing the book, and devouring (and redevouring it). I honestly don't know how well it would hold up were I to read it now -- or how well my children will like it -- but I can't wait to find out.
