Comprehensive Chronology of WWI, May 29, 2009

This attractive 2 volume set is the most comprehensive chronology that I've been able to find. It differs from most other lists in that it is built around a nine column matrix. The dates go down the page. The column headings going across the page are: Western Front Eastern Front Southern Fronts Turkish Fronts African Operations Sea War Air War International Events Home Fronts With this matrix format its easier to view all the different events on the same day and its easier to view a particular Front over a long period than a conventional listing. This format is ideal when comparing two different fronts over a period of time. Some of the listings are brief but are still understandable. It also helps if you're familiar with military jargon. Between the two volumes, including the 3 years after hostilities ended, there is over 550 pages devoted to the chronology. There is more to this book than the list though. There are tables describing different stats; there is also a Who's Who section giving a bio on the key participants of the war. There is also a decent map section that includes all the fronts and the key battles of the war. A glossary follows that explains abbreviations and terms used. The book ends with a good index that will help you find people and places. The authors have spent a lot of time on these books and it shows. If you have an interest in this period, you should consider acquiring this Chronicle.
