Hannah was left with no spouse to support her, so she accepted a position as a schoolteacher at a tiny school in St. Jude. She discovered that she loved the work, but living in the same city she'd lived with Patrick made it hard for her to put aside her sadness and go on in life. When she read the advertising in the newspaper, she felt it would be a chance to leave all she had lost behind and start a new life.
Now, she was only hours from doing what she'd set out to achieve and the choice again looked to be a sensible option. She would get off the stagecoach in Leland, grab her suitcase, and then see Mayor Wilfred Darlington, the man who had answered her query and had given her the position. He'd written that he had arranged a place at a boarding home for her and would assist her to get established.
When the stagecoach drew into Leland, Hannah glanced at the watch on her left wrist. That watch was her late husband's wedding present to her and the one item she'd saved that would remind her of him. The hands on the watch stated it was 10 minutes till noon.
Hannah's initial reaction was that Leland was bigger than she had imagined it would be. She had imagined simply a modest general store, a small motel, a blacksmith shop, and a Marshall's office. That's what the elder lady on the stagecoach had stated was in most little communities in Texas.
