Excellent Eye-Witness Account

China in the 1970s is the epitome of what we call foreign culture. Simon Leys, in this penetrating analysis of the country, clears the fog from the misunderstood culture and serves up a much needed crtical exposé of a totalitarian society at its most fearful. This book is not objective, but it is genuine. And it is a heart-felt work by an author who doesn't criticize for for fame, but because he in love with China and sees in it so much potential. Read this book for an insider's peak at a Chinese society that functions almost entirely outside of the global radar.
