A concise, insightful "what and why" on China's Policy

This book lays out in easy, direct terminology--while citing giants in the Asian scholarhip community--the basic tenents of foreign relations from China's point of view. It discusses the apparatus of foreign policy-decision making and the agencies within China that affect policy. It covers philosophically the "mindset" of China's policy formulation, strategies, and goals. Roy gives an objective, frank, and insightful presentation of China's objectives in the coming future with respect to Northeast, Southeast, and South Asia. A criticism above asserts that Roy is "a bit sympathetic toward Beijing." I have actually been a student of Professor Roy, and he is anything BUT a Sino-phile. He IS, however, an extremely informed scholar of China and International Relations, and his knowledge allows for a fair and balanced interpretation and presentation of China's foreign relations from Beijing's point of view. The title is, afterall, China's Foreign Relations. . . Highly recommended for college students. I use it as a principal source of reference and understanding of China's foreign policy motivations in my preparation as a China Foreign Area Officer in the US Armed Forces.

A fresh, well-written and complete overview

A terse, up-to-date review of China's relations with particular countries and China's interactions with international forces in general. Very readable and fresh, in contrast to so many similar books that have far too much on the old Cold War "strategic triangle" issues. A lot on China's Asian relationships in addition to the usual Sino-Russian and Sino-U.S. relationships. The book has insightful, balanced analysis on many important contemporary issues, including China's ambiguous view of globalization, the Taiwan problem, the new PLA, and the "China threat" question. Excellent text for college students.
