This is a very important and interesting book on children's arithmetic. It describes the ways in which children learn and the most important sources of difficulty. It emphazizes that learning arithmetic is not a single, simple process, but involves many components. Even children who have difficulty with some of these components usually cope well with others. It is very readable, and yet never simplistic. Nearly 30 years after its publication, it is still a vital book for teachers, parents, researchers, and all who have an interest in how children learn arithmetic. It is a pity that the book is so hard to get, especially in the UK. Please, someone, bring out a new British edition!
