Mei Mei and Chang's life in their Chinese village takes a drastic turn after Yangtze River begins to rise and sweeps the houses, trees, animals, and peop along its path. This description may be from another edition of this product.
This is a story of Mei-Mei's family and other families who live in a village by the river banks of the Yangtze river. Mei-Mei & her friend Chang walk to and from to school together each day and back home again evening. One day the rains began and don't stop. The Yangtze river begins to slowly grow and grow and begin to flood the village. Homes and crops disappear in the currents of the mighty Yangtze. In a week the river slows and begins to go down showing crops that where once green are now brown with silt & mud, Most of the homes where washed away, but everyone in the village is safe. They all know that their village & homes can be rebuilt and begin to do so building on higher ground. With everyones help the new village begins to grow. Even the children do their part and help plant the in the now richs soil that the mud left from the river. With the suns warmth these crop would soon grow big and strong. When the village was ready there was a great party with firecrackers and lanterns hung in the trees. This book was first published in Denmark in 1982 and then translated to English in 1985. I believe both text and the illustrations where done by Svend Otto S and I think are done in watercolor. The illustrations are beautiful and show life on the river banks of the mighty Yangtze River that could probably still been found today in rural China. The illustrations are nicely done and I think this book is a real gem for your home library and to show our children how other people live.
