Despite dating from 1982, this interiors book shows classic rooms of European homes which have, for the most part, stood the test of time. All of the interiors had previously been featured in the magazine "Architectural Digest", and the stories are edited to fit this format and the photos re-captioned, so it is a thumb-nail approach rather than in-depth. Featured homes range from palatial homes such as Chatsworth which is also a museum to the former home of Napoleon's sister Pauline Borghese which is the home of the British Ambassador in Paris to a maharaja's palace that is now a hotel to a former folly that was home to the late Gervase Jackson-Stops. There are new villas in addition to historic houses, but all are in one of the traditional styles suitable to their locale. Work by interior designers David Hicks, Serge Royaux, Valerian Rybar, Alain Demachy, and Renzo Mongiardiano is included. Photography by Derry Moore, Oberto Gili and others is not reproduced to the quality found in the glossy coffee table books 25 years later, but this book remains an interesting reference in the history of interior design, all the same.
