This is a terrific book for serious students of women's history. It's readable--intended for college course use, it's much better-written than the average textbook. Also included are many unusual illustrations, time lines, brief excerpts from documents, and references to additional readings. Bonnie Smith is a noted scholar of early modern and women's history who takes pains to orient her readers to the general historical context, while focussing on the lives and experiences of women. Although famous women receive some attention, her emphasis is on the lives of more ordinary women. She carefully distinguishes the experiences of rural, working- class, middle-class, and aristocratic women, which often were strikingly different in important ways. The book covers almost 3 centuries in about 540 pages. It's clear and interesting and has worked well with my students. There's nothing else in print now that's nearly as good.
