Labor Issues and Working for Change

Though her dad has his own business, Rebecca's cousin Ana's family has two members who work in a factory. One day, Rebecca and her cousin Ana deliver lunch to the coat factory where Rebecca's Uncle Jacob and cousin Josef work. Rebecca is taken aback by the overall work environment and conditions. During a subsequent strike, she hopes to help, and goes despite being told not to. The strike has consequences that generate unexpected changes for the families. American Girl often tackles difficult topics from history, attempting to make them more accessible for children. While labor issues are a dark historical truth, this issue is an important one and is presented in an age-appropriate way, though some children may be frightened by some of the events. This is the most educational title in Rebecca's series, placing Rebecca right in the middle of history and showing her hoping to help shape it. Not all of _Changes for Rebecca_ is dark. There are plenty of happy changes, too. This book is a great conclusion to the series that still leaves room for the imagination of readers to continue the story.
