Appealing story

Review by Joseph Andersen for Reader Views (5/06) "Chaconne," the first novel by fly fishing, guitar playing helicopter pilot Joseph C. Mastroianni weaves together two tales - that of Milo, a man who lives a life as varied as the author, and Johann Sebastian Bach - composer of the Chaconne - the piece that Mastroianni named his novel after and that haunts Milo's (and Mastroianni's) life. Milo's life is touched by death and haunted by guilt. Bach, like most of his contemporaries, is surrounded by death and tragedy. Through music, especially the Chaconne, both men, separated by centuries find their way to their ultimate meaning. Mastroianni's work is well done, and his story is appealing. It will be especially attractive to devotees of Bach's music.

Lives come together though centuries apart

Chaconne is a master's masterpiece. Mastroianni, in his first novel, captures 'levels' of life-love, joys, sorrows, accomplishments, fears, hardships, admiration, acceptance, of two men born centuries apart, sixteenth century beloved composer Johann Sebastian Bach and modern-day helicopter pilot and musician, Italian-American Milo Damiani. Bach wrote Chaconne to honor is first wife who died at 35. Milo, abandoned by the father who introduced him to Chaconne, was seduced by the message of the music and studied in Spain for four years to master the powerful piece. Bach and Milo are joined over the ages by Chaconne as music serves the two men as templates for their lives. Chaconne is earthy, thrilling, raw, heartwarming. A joy to read.

Hard To Put Down

A book full of surprises! I knew little about Bach, and nothing about his Chaconne, but do now. The book depicts two large slices of life, lived in different time periods, with scenes that come alive like in a movie. It's raw, passionate, at times shocking and irreverent, but totally genuine. A saga in less than 500 pages!

Apart In Time, United Through Music

The coming-of-age of Milo Damiani, an Italian-American kid obsessed with J.S. Bach's Chaconne played by the father who abandoned him, & that of Bach himself are intertwined in a story by fits & starts hilarious, sad, & even shocking. From guitar lessons in Madrid to helicopers in Vietnam, from revenge in the Louisiana bayous to glory in the organ lofts of baroque German chathedrals, this moving epic reveals a realization of life's truths. It's a fine entertainment & a biography of Bach as a bonus!
