Excellent CCNA Command Reference Manual

CCNA Command Quick Reference (ISBN 1587131595) is a short and concise reference to the commands needed for CCNA level and the CCNA exam. It is published by CiscoPress for the Cisco Networking Academy Program, but is excellent for anyone on the job or studying for the CCNA. The reference manual is effective because it follows the logical sequence presented in the Academy courses. This is a proven way of building on basics, moving to more advanced concepts, and presenting "tips and tricks" to assist network managers. The organization of the book follows specific chapters in the CCNA curriculum, but is not a "textbook" and is just a good, all-around reference manual with commands, what they do, variations/parameters, and explanations. The commands are grouped by topic, grouped by Cisco device/model, and presented in table format which is easy to read. To accompany these groups of commands, there are "notes" to improve understanding of command or to improve performance. I would recommend this as a resource for not only Academy students, but it would be handy on the job and definitely beneficial to have when studying for the CCNA exam. This reference manual also contains a "Quick Reference Chart" inside the front cover to help navigate the manual according to task. This is especially helpful for those who do not know the command, but know what they want to do. The back cover has a "Steps to Configuring a Router" list in logical sequence-again a concise summary of what needs to be done. Appendices include IP subnetting and VLSM. The tables and examples are clear and easy to read. These are a good review for everyone as it is expected network managers are very proficient in subnetting. There is not an index, but the Table of Contents is detailed. This manual introduces Cisco routers and other devices, covers managing IOS, then moves on to routing protocols, TCP/IP error and control messages, troubleshooting, and ACLs. The network topologies are representative of real-world situations with examples that can be easily applied to a variety of situations. As the author, Scott Empson, indicates, CCNA Command Quick Reference contains "All the CCNA-level commands in one compact, portable resource." It is easy to read and understand and written for the beginner; the design is specifically for Academy students. Because of this, it is also relevant for network managers on the job and those studying for the CCNA. This quality publication from CiscoPress deserves 5 stars.

Wonderful resource for the Cisco Networking Academy Student

When this book first arrived at my door, I was a little surprised to see how thin it was; after all, how much information can you possibly cram into a book the size of a "pocket reference guide" ? Pleasantly, I couldn't have been more wrong, and pleasantly so! As an instructor of the Cisco Networking Academy, I have seen firsthand the value of students keeping good notes (and good reference material for that matter). When attempting to configure a router or switch to perform an unfamiliar function for the first few times, many students find themselves digging for the right commands in either their textbook or notes. Finding the commands is usually only the first half of the battle. Once the right commands are located, understanding which commands to use and when to use them is a challenge in itself. This book, CCNA Command Quick Reference, takes the concept of "good notes" to the next level. This book is written from the perspective of someone who has gone through the curriculum and has taken keen notes, but to such an extent that they are not just notes - they're self-explanatory directions of how to complete a task. Not only are important commands presented, but case-study style examples explain not only how, but where to use each of the commands. Closely following the Cisco Networking Academy blueprint for CCNA students, progressing from CCNA 1 all the way through CCNA 4, commands needed for the task at hand are easily found, and understood. The author was very wise when aligning his chapter layout in sync with the Cisco Networking Academy curriculum. From configuring RIP, to ISDN DDR, to 802.1q VLAN trunking, and everything in-between, this book will serve as a valuable reference, and could be considered a CCNA handbook for "getting the job done". To the individual considering purchase of this book - believe me, this book is not just a list of commands, this is a guide to performing common tasks at hand, with the key information needed to use the commands properly. I would definitely recommend a copy of this book to any student currently pursuing the Cisco Networking Academy at the CCNA level, and I plan on showing it to my own students right away.

Finally, a Hand-Sized Handbook!

CCNA Command Quick Reference by Scott Empson is a small, but dense book stuffed with the most common commands you will use in daily practice. It is ideal for a student who is taking the CCNA courses or preparing for the CCNA exam. The networker who is into Cisco every day will know most of this book in his head. But there are always times when we forget the most basic things, especially if we don't do it everyday. No space in this book is wasted. The inside cover has a list of "What do you want to do?" questions that send you straight to the answers you need. There is zero padding. To arrive at such an economy of words, Empson must have done many rewrites and painful cuts. But the result, page for page, is the most useful Cisco book I have ever read. There is nothing in this book that the CCNA candidate and anyone who works with Cisco equipment should not memorize. But since memory sometimes fails me, there will always be room on my desk for the CCNA Command Quick Reference. The layout is easy to read. Everything that you would actually see on a router is in blue. The commands you would type are in bold blue, and explanations are in black. The Units cover the four parts of the CCNA courses in the Cisco Network Academy program. The commands are covered in Parts II through IV. The appendix has a section dedicated to understanding subnetting and another section that covers VSLM. The inside back cover has a nice checklist entitled "steps to configuring a router".

Essential and brief CCNA reference

When teaching mathematics and computer science, I often refer to my personal RAM. By that I mean the formulas and commands that I commit to memory. With so much to understand, in many cases the most efficient person is the one who understands exactly what should be committed to memory and where to quickly find the critical information in the shortest possible time. I also refer to my immediate reference shelf, that small space within easy reach where I keep the books that I consult most frequently. With so many Cisco IOS software commands, committing all of them to memory is an arduous task. The purpose of this book is to provide a compact reference to the commands and how they are used. The commands are introduced as components of examples of operations to perform. The action(s) to be performed are given as the header of a two-column table, where the left column is the sequence of commands and the right column contains explanations of what the command does. This is an excellent way to demonstrate the programming techniques, far superior to simply giving the command and an explanation in isolation. In computer programming, it is the synergistic interaction between the commands that makes the program work rather than the actions of the individual commands. This is a book that will find itself on my immediate reference shelf and by being there, it will save me a significant amount of personal RAM.

A slim, detail-packed command reference

Engineers and programmers seeking a quick reference to Cisco IOS Software commands and options now have something more practical use than weighty manuals. CCNA Command Quick Reference is a slim, detail-packed command reference organized in the order of modules in the four CCNA Networking Academy courses: networking, routers, switching, and WAN technologies. Use this as a memory assister and supplementary guide: whether you're a student taking Cisco's Networking Academy Program or an engineer using the system, it's a fine command reference.
