Okay, but not great

2.5 stars. I'm not saying this book is bad, but it's not great. There was a lot of tell than show, and over explanation of certain things. I love fantasy, so when she explained what a necromancer was, I felt like she was speaking down to the reader, which I found aggravating. I liked her setting and her explanations of society, but the idea of people flocking to a city after a zombie outbreak does not sound smart, especially if you are a dystopian lover. I did not feel like she studied disaster scenarios and what happens afterwards, which kind of showed. There are a lot of common tropes (strong female character who's not like other girls, etc.) and themes in this book, and some of her lines are kind of parodies, but the action is fun. If you like action with okay characters (I could not relate to the main character), then you might like this series. She obviously worked hard on this, and I thank her for her work. She does show her love for the genre, and I hope she continues. I might look into reading the rest of the series, but I don't know for sure. I'm on the fence.
