Yes, as far as I'm concerned, fishing is an art. This is one of the most comprehensive books available on Chesapeake Bay rockfishing. Numerous illustrations, techniques and tips for trolling, chumming... This description may be from another edition of this product.
If you get excited at the thought of catching monster rockfish during Maryland's spring and fall "trophy" rockfish seasons...if you're looking for information on how to catch more and/or BIGGER rockfish from a boat (in the Chesapeake Bay or elsewhere), this is THE book. It's about as detailed a manual for catching a specific saltwater species as you'll find. And even though its title refers to "Chesapeake" rockfish, it will be of great help to "striper" anglers all along the east coast, fishing in every season and all depths of water. This book covers a huge gammut of information in a very easy to read format, with concise chapters and TONS of photographs and diagrams (seriously...almost every page in the 200 page book has at least one). The contents include specific instructions on spring and fall trolling, bottom bouncing, chumming, jigging, live bait fishing, line types, line weights, trolling depths, trolling rigs, lure colors and selection, handling fish and bait, plans for making your own planer boards, knots, conservation, and fishing ethics. The last 50 pages of the book include stories from the author's many years of experience as a private and charter captain. From these anecdotes (and all the monster rock pictures), you'll learn even more about where and when to fish for rockfish in the bay depending on seasons, weather, tides, etc. The author, Rich Novotny, is the Exective Director of the Maryland Saltwater Sportsfishermen's Association, and from the MANY black and white photos in this book, it's evident that the man knows how to catch rockfish. This book does not specifically cover catching rockfish by shoreline, pier, or surf, though some of the information on baits, lures, and such might still be of value. If you're looking for a book specifically on those topics, I highly suggest Coastal Fishing in the Carolinas: From Surf, Pier, and Jetty by Robert J. Goldstein (one of my all-time favorite books on fishing) or Lenny Rudow's Rudow's Guide to Fishing the Chesapeake.
