Not their best

I kept waiting for this book to get better but it was just a long slow slog with no reward. There was no suspense and the main character wasn't likeable or relatable. Very disappointing.

Can Things Get Any Worse

With Catch Me When I Fall you have Holly Krauss, who is a successful business owner and wife. She is the typical happy woman who seems to have everything on the outside but inside it's a different darker story. So things go awry after she has a one-night stand with a guy named Rees, who has a sinister and evil side to him. She continues making enemies by firing one of her employees, insulting clients (not being her normal and happy charming self) then looses a lot of money in a poker game. So her life gets all in an uproar and ugly with a loan shark on her back, Rees and a client stalking her, and the employee she fired is now trying to sue her company. Can things get any worse? Yes, because on top of all of that, she now is suspecting that her husband is having an affair and has distanced her best friend and business partner Meg, causing everything to fall apart at once. This puts Holly into the hospital with a mental breakdown and she attempts suicide. She has a much needed realization and is faced with trying to put everything back together. So wow, does Holly have problems. Can she work her way through them? Gotta catch this book to find out.

Riveting

I'd never read Nicci French before I happened across this book at Barnes & Noble. I'm not sorry I found it. What a ride! Her story of a woman's gradual disintegration is both horrifying and riveting. It wasn't a comfortable read. Instead, it touched places that, in the universality of their truth, made me distinctly uncomfortable. I couldn't put it down. Now I'm going out to look for the rest of French's books. If they're as good as this one, she has a new convert.

Dizzying Insight into Bi-Polar, With Mystery and Suspence As A Bonus

I love mysteries, I love psychological suspense thrillers. Nicci French manages to combine both genres into this ingenious story about the suffering endured by those afflicted with Bi-Polar Disorder and the suffering of those whose lives touch them. Ms. French never fails to offer us a wonderfully woven mystery, develop interesting characters, and give us necessary information at the same time. This story keeps us guessing until the end, and wraps it all up nicely, showing us that even those among us who suffer psychological disorders can have happy endings. One of her best books yet!

Stalking the unreliable narrator

Bestselling British writer Nicci French's latest is a lot more atmosphere than action, which is by no means a bad thing and plenty terrifying in a teetering-on-the-precipice kind of way. Holly Krauss is a glittering, larger-than-life, unreliable narrator headed for a bad fall. A mercurial entrepreneur, partnered with her more solid and reliable friend Meg, Holly lives on the edge and loves it that way. Until one night things go too far and she ends up sleeping with a stranger, cheating on her husband of less than a year. Sick at heart as well as bruised and hung over, Holly nonetheless picks herself up and keeps right on going - dazzling the clients at work, putting her husband's neglected accounts in order, drumming up new clients, being the life of the party. Except when she isn't. Holly can turn savage and cutting, and makes enemies as fast as friends. Only she's not always aware that she's not being charming. Or is she ever as sparkling and witty as she thinks she is? Meanwhile her one-night-stand has taken umbrage and become a menacing stalker, threatening to expose her to her husband, and worse. And poor Charlie, her illustrator husband, just doesn't seem to have her energy or drive. Holly suspects he's not even working half the time and as her own secret festers she begins to think he's having an affair. But these are just the beginning of Holly's troubles. Before French is done with her Holly will have plunged off that precipice and taken a gathering swarm of dangers with her. Like Ruth Rendell, French cocoons the reader in the dark and claustrophobic hidden corners of the human heart. --Portsmouth Herald
