Complex characterization makes this book stand out.

I am a college senior who read this book for a young adult literature class and I was extremely impressed with how this book broke free from the usual stereotypes of its genre. Woods did a wonderful job of explaining the killer's motivations and portraying him as a sympathetic character. This book never fell back on the good or evil, black or white characterization. Instead, the people in Catch a Killer were created in shades of gray and the killer showed that it is possible to be both good and evil.
