Almost thirty years ago, I wrote and directed the feature film, Rigoletto. If you recall, the story took place in a small town, in Carbon County, Utah. Castle Gate was indeed a historical town that at one time thrived just north of Helper, Utah. Unfortunately, but for a few old foundations, it is no longer exists. My mother, Bonnie, grew up there. Her stories provided me with the material from which I created Castle Gates. This story, and those that follow, have nothing in common with the film, Rigoletto, that was released in 1994, other than the name of the sad little town, that can be in truth referred to as a 'Ghost Town.' But Castle Gates, to me, is far from being a Ghost Town. The child in me that lives eternally, as the child in all of us never really dies, but at times is forgotten, but lives in each and every one of us whose progenitors preceded us in life, but stand side by side to the living generation, just as it will in ten years, or fifty years, or, as it has, in centuries to come. Castle Gates is in very fact a reality, a thriving, bustling town, forever remembered by me, and many, many others. It's just that now, the houses are gone, moved to the mouth of Spring Canyon east of Helper. But it's reality is very real indeed. It simply must be rebuilt in our hearts and minds with words, words that paint pictures of those that have gone on before us.
