An Authentic Look at the Material

Tom Harper writes in a clear and authentic voice about the realities of leaving the secular business world to cross over into ministry. Harper's purpose is not to convince the reader to enter the ministry, rather, present the reality of doing so. The book is based on empirical data collected from over 700 survey respondents that left the marketplace to cross-over into ministry. Harper does a decent job of balancing the factual data with the ups and downs of ministry, the challenges of making the adjustment, and the difficulty of the journey. The author points out that God must always be consulted and followed. Amen! I found several gems in the book. One example is the story of Jesus himself working in the family business before crossing over into His ministry. Now there's a thought. Harper includes first hand inspiring stories told by those who have made the leap. The points to ponder at the end of each chapter help the reader to think through their own journey and season of life as it relates to the information presented. Harper concludes the book with rich resources in the appendices. I would recommend this book to anyone thinking about going into ministry whether as paid staff or lay leader. If you have found your calling, you have found a rich resource to help you think through if and how you might step into the journey. I found this resource to be helpful in determining if I am in a time of preparation or in a time of crossing over. Well worth the read.
