On Being Trinidadian

I have read both of these author's spectacular books and I am so proud that she represents our culture so richly with all the layers it possesses. I suppose when you are born and are a part of a particular culture there are so many things one takes for granted, and her books bring back all of those memories, the good and the bad.Thanks.

A wonderful, touching and at the end even suprising story! The best book Roslyn Carrington ever wrote!

Matilda "Mattie" Dinkins surrounds herself with mirrors of all shapes and sizes and dresses in brightly colored clothing. Mattie is the illegitimate child of Dominic Evers; a father she and her mother spent time with every Wednesday throughout her life. Mattie's fear of not being known and regarded prompts her obsession with the mirrors in her life.Dominic, born into wealth, which he continued to amass throughout his life, is a well-known, church going and respected businessman. Mattie is his dark skinned secret conceived by Claudine, a woman from the wrong side of the tracks.Jonah Reyes is the maid's nephew and Dominic's pet project. As a young boy Jonah is sent to live with his aunt and the Evers family. Dominic grooms Jonah into an astute student and businessman. During his lifetime Jonah becomes the friend, protector and finally husband of Justine, Dominic's daughter by his wife Faith. Dominic's death causes a domino effect of emotions and the discovery of self within the family structure for all of the characters. Are these characters mere puppets of Dominic Evers? The Color of Life

Mattie Dinkins just wants to exist. She has spent her entire life trying to do just that. Her bedroom is filled with mirrors and she only wears bright and bold colors so that she will stand out and be seen. Mattie's father the late Dominic Evers was a successful, rich and fair skinned business man who visited her once a week at her home. Mattie is as dark as her father is light. Although he often visited Mattie, outside of her home he never acknowledged his relationship to her. Jonah Reyes is the nephew of the Evers'maid. He was taken under the wing of the great Dominic Evers, and he has also become the son Dominic never had. In some respects Jonah has become Dominics shadow. Jonah is fair skinned and also tries to emulate Dominic in his dress and actions. Marrying Justice Evers, Dominics other daughter is his official entrance into the Evers Family. When Dominic dies, Jonah's world is forever changed. Roslyn Carrington's Candy Don't Come In Gray is an emotionally charged journey that leaves the reader breathless. It is a beautifully written literary work that flows like water. Ms. Carrington's writing is a gift and as a reader I am pleased that she chooses to share it with the world.Reviewed by Simone A. A really, really good read!

Candy Don't Come in Gray was a bright, fun, and insightful read. I picked it up because I enjoyed Carrington's other two books, A Thirst for Rain and Every Bitter Thing Sweet so much. I was half afraid that it wouldn't be anywhere near as good as those two, but I was glad to find that Carrington is really coming into her own. I mean, I think in many ways it's better. It was smart and sexy.There are so many little nuances to the story, and the interplay between all of the characters was so real, they all sounded like people you could actually know. As someone who spent over 7 years living in Trinidad, I liked seeing one of my favorite places brought to life. Glad I picked it up!
