I almost passed up this little gem of a book on Marilyn; but luckily I thumbed through it and immediately saw there was something special about it. I have quite a few books on this treasured personality; and without doubt there must be hundreds published by now. It seems that many, many have tried "to capture" the essence of Marilyn . Try as they may,and many have been very good;it still remains an elusive goal. It almost seems as difficult or impossible as trying to define love, peace, honor, happiness, sadness or many of those things that people feel so much. In this little book, 81/2 by 81/2 inches, Elton John and Bernie Taupin, with the help of some of the best known photographs of Marilyn ,come as close as any in capturing what Marilyn was all about. She had it all, and arguably ,no other "star" before or after can even compare. The book of 45 pages and only 29 photographs is a tribute to the life of Norma Jean Baker and the memory of Marilyn Monroe. The photos are all B & W,but she was so beautiful and photogenic that her beauty came through whether in B & W or Color. One can only imagine the number of photos that were taken over her career, and the number that never emerged from the photographers darkrooms or the film editing rooms. Personally,I can't recall ever seeing a photo of her that wasn't captivating. Just to try and pick a few favorites is totally impossible; even to pick a couple of favorites from this book is impossible;they're all so good. The photos of Marilyn singing Happy Birthday to the President, her skirt blowing above the subway ventilation grate, immediately come to mind;but they are only a couple of the countless reminders we have of her. The words of the song are discretely included along with the photographs and there are also 4 celluloid ,opaque pages that are very haunting. This is the type of book that anyone who followed, enjoyed and was enchanted by Marilyn;will pick it up from time to time to glance through. Oh;what a star, legend and treasure she was and what a loss to us that she was with us for such a short time.
