Two Books in One

I found this book to be two books in one - the combination of sharing the personal patient battles in treating cancer by the physician/author and the author's forays into the forests and mountains of Shenandoah Park. Beautifully written with even more beautiful photography, I was swept up in the multitude of natural information of the beautiful part of the United States where Bruce goes to seek grounding and solace. In his telling the stories of his patients and the long relationships he has with them, it is clear that there is something for everyone in this book; something each person reading this book will find as his/her personal takeaway message. I highly recommend this book for anyone who's life is touched with cancer.

Balancing Nature and Human Resilience against Cancer

The author weaves a brilliant tapestry showcasing the wonder and awe of nature and human resilience against his profession as a clinical oncologist which he performed with knowledge, skill and compassion to improve the quality of life of his cancer patients. Bruce Silver assimilates the seriousness of his medical practice with an enthusiasm for the nature found in the Blue Ridge Mountains. The book's voice goes back and forth, in a natural way to tell and show (wonderful photographs) the inspiration from humans (anecdotal stories of his patients) and nature. He provides scientific depth (references and facts!) on the birds, flowers, deer, bear, butterflies and even lichens in the Blue Ridge. He provides detail and depth including well placed "medical jargon translations" on some of his inspirational case histories. And in his Epilogue provides some thoughts about the future in the fight against cancer. If you like beautiful photos of nature, buy the book. If you like to see how an intense work life is balanced with trips to undisturbed nature, buy this book. If you want to read some (short and quick) inspirational human stories, buy this book.
