Don't file a California appeal without it.

It's not perfect, but it beats the heck out of the Harvard Blue Book. It's well indexed and (with the pocket parts) up-to-date. Using it is not a matter of making appellate research attorneys happy (although, speaking from experience, not using it makes us very sad), it shows that you care. It makes our job easier and makes you look better. For example, use of the "federal(really, Harvard) case citation, with the date at the end, is distracting and takes more keystrokes. Other examples can be found. In short, use it, and no other style manual, in your California state appeals. (Plus, it's cheap.
