A very good sequence of calculus books that deserve more credit ...

It is a great mystery to me that the 3 volume calculus set by Marsden is not mentioned with the cream of the crop calculus books such as Spivak, Apostol, Courant, Strang, etc... This is an excellent treatment of calculus that has much to offer the reader: 1. The coverage contains the optimal amount of rigor for a first course. Engineers and physicists will not be turned off (as they might be by Spivak or Apostol) and ivory tower math types will at least appreciate that this book is far superior to the watered down treatment given in the usual mass produced calculus texts (e.g., Stewart). 2. The 3 volume paperback format - where each volume is only a few hundred pages - is a vast improvement over the 6.5 pound monolithic calculus textbook in vogue today. 3. Marsden write very well and covers all the right topics. I like the organization of the book - especially the fact that integration is covered early in the first book. I should also mention that Marsden is one of the rare mathematicians who is both an excellent research mathematician and also cares about undergraduate teaching and mathematics pedagogy. In summary, if you are an undergrad in math, physics, or engineering (or are just looking for a good review text), these books should be given serious consideration as your primary textbook. Highly recommended !
