The above mentioned book was a gift. The fact that a friend, who lives and is a citizen of Prague, the Czech Republic specifically asked for the First Discovery books does deserve, in my opinion, a five star rate.
The second of this series I'd highly recommend

This series is an imitation of the Eyewitness format for younger readers with see-through pages thrown in. I'd recommend it primarily to preschoolers. Except for the wrong definition of moth vs. butterfly and a picture late in the book that implies that the hawkmoth (not the cicada) starts life underground, this is an excellent books with great information presented in a colorful, entertaining manner. It covers the diet, anatomy, and lifecycle of butterflies, as well as touching on the vast variety of species.
A wonderful series!

My four-year-old son and I are both BIG fans of the First Discovery Book series. We own a handful of these books, and if finances would permit, we would own them all!As for the Horn Book statement "The text is often difficult to read over the illustrations", I totally DISAGREE. It is a non-fiction picture book, consisting of a multitude of captions. The transparent pages are the main reasons we are drawn to these books. They in no way hinder the reading of the text.
