a review from the author

This book covers a broad range of topics from Applets to EJBs all in the context of the J2EE architecture using the IBM WebSphere Studio development tool. The many different J2EE APIs have entire books dedicated to them that go into great depth. This book is intended to give the reader a broad understanding of the development side of J2EE applications using many different samples. The samples in the book use step-by-step instructions with screen captures to show the reader how to build different applications in WebSphere Studio. The source code for the samples is in the book and also on the web site for the book. There are a few Java APIs that do not have any special tooling in WebSphere Studio, like the Java Mail API, so they are not covered in this book. The WebSphere Bible and Professional IBM WebSphere 5.0 Application Server are good companion books that cover server configuration and Enterprise Edition features. There is an anonymous reviewer that seems intent on bashing this book. No book is perfect, but this book does not deserve the bashing or one star ratings. We have many emails from people who enjoy the book, and we have personally answered reader's questions. I suggest that you judge the book for yourself.

Good book on WSAD

I really like this book because it not only covers WSAD but it also shows practical tips for developing web applications. It makes for a good mixture of how to use WSAD and many different examples from JSPs to message driven beans. I don't agree with the reviews that call it light on WSAD, only the first chapter covering J2EE concepts does not have anything on WSAD.

Great Book

I bought this book to learn how to use WSAD. It has lots of examples with the code included in each chapter. I wish there was a CD, but I got the code for the web site. The examples were helpful way to learn all the different ways to develop J2EE applications in WSAD. The Websphere tool is a bit complicated, so this book helped me learn how to get around it and get something done.

Excellent tutorials

This book is an excellent overview of J2EE technology and provides the novice J2EE developer the tools to understand and immediately begin developing web apps with WSAD. It contains a number of WSAD tutorials that I found to be invaluable as I began learning J2EE and WSAD basics.

Excellant turoial on WSAD

This book covers a lot of topics, so I did not finish all the chapters. I learned how to use WSAD to build applications for the web. The examples in the book were very helpful and they showed many different types of J2EE applications. You have to go to the web site for the book to get the completed labs. This book is great for understanding WSAD version 5.
