Must Have Book

The second edition is an outstanding primer on building models. The book is both for college students and senior finance professionals with or without excel experience. The book does a great job of explaining excel functions and how to use excel. The book guides you through building a model which can balance through both the balance sheet and or the statement of cash flow, which is fantastic and no other modeling book does. The photo shots of the excell sheets and the formulas used is a huge help in seeing the big picture. The author does a superb job of explaining the cash and debt sweep scenarios ( a most complicated excel topic) and lays it out in a manner that is easy to understand. This is a must have book for every person that is learning to build models.

The Real Deal

This book demystifies the black box of financial forecasting. With over twenty fives on Wall Street, and now in a position to teach my son the tricks of the trade, this work is an invaluable tool. No gimmicks. What you see is what you get. Lots of experience behind this text. Step by step instructions, which is the only way to learn -- especially for the generation that still reads the instruction manual ! Next book should be about modeling typical Wall Street transactions, like public to private transactions, or sponsor to sponsor LBOs.

simple and to the point

Definitely one of the best out there -- you can read it in 2 days and have a decent full blown model done... The next edition should cover more industries, as models differ a lot depending on industry, etc. For ex: banks and internet companies and manufacturers, etc

Great financial modeling book

Fantastic financial modeling book! This should be the text (or at least supplemental) for any serious corporate finance or financial modeling class. I wish it would've been metioned in my MBA classes. The book covers basics of Excel and accounting so you don't need to be an expert on either subject. The *best* part are the highly-detailed, step-by-step, in-depth models that show the reader how to: (1) Link the balance sheet, income statement, and statement of cash flows (2) Repay debt via cash sweep (3) Make a dynamic model financial model that can be applied to many situations I have several financial modeling books, a couple of them are very good. This book is peerless as it walks the reader through the modeling process, from beginning to end. I highly recommend it. JB

Clear, concise, and practical

This book is elegant in its straightforward but sophisticated explanation of accounting concepts and how to implement them in a spreadsheet to make financial statement projections. The author was a banker for many years, and you won't find a clearer explanation of how to model debt repayments (cash sweep). Equity analysts can easily add features relevant to them. Highly recommended.
