The title says it all...

If you want to learn how to build advanced database applications using your free apache webserver and a database (ANY DATABASE Practically, most of which are free!) then this is the book for you. Inside The Cover you will find: SQL Primer (Mandatory for writing db apps), Design Theory & Insights, Lots of great example code, A Solid Reference (could be better), Compartive overviews of the supported databases. The book is well organized and very easy to read. Outside of the webserver and database software, the included CD is very weak; as is the website that book refers you too. Nevertheless, you aren't buying the book for the CD or the website are you?

Great for Postgres but NOT for mySql

When I began the book I thought "Oh Wow, this is great". Unfortunately, all the examples are for Postgres. There are about 15 pages of reference for mySQL and they are a bit cryptic. I had trouble converting the Postgres commands in the examples to their mySQL equivalent. Ultimately, I found that I needed to buy a second book since I was using mySQL. The concept of using their web site for testing is fantastic. I love the style and enthusiasm of the book.

Great Book for Beginners!

Got the book yesterday and loved it. Though they rave about the almost 600 pages in this book, there is actually only 152 pages of actual "tutorials." This is broken into 8 major categories. Though 152 pages seems little, it is so well written that by the time you finish the tutorials, you are on your way. The rest is a function reference, but a very well written one, not just a rehash of some man pages. Each function entry has an explanation of what the function does, the function and syntax, and then several examples written out (not just pieces of code, but entire examples) for you to put into you webpage. In a nutshell, this is finally THE book to start with for non-programmers and programmers, housewives, babies, small dogs..anyone that wants to learn PHP quickly. I recommend getting the "MySQL New Riders" book and " Building Database Applications on the Web Using PHP3" (this one) for anyone wanting to learn (and quickly I might add) how to use this language. I have bought just about every PHP book out there and this is the first one to actually spoon-feed the information in a way that you will learn PHP in a night (well, I stayed up most of it.)
