Buffalo Jones: unsung hero of the American west

Buffalo Jones was a unique human being and a truly remarkable American. Born in Illinois, he moved to Kansas shortly after the Civil War, married, became a farmer and then got restless to do more. While remaining a devoted husband and father, Charles Jesse Jones managed to found and help develop the city of Garden City, Kansas, rescue buffalo calves from the Texas panhandle to develop a small breeder herd to save the American Bison from extinction, to travel to the Klondike in the gold rush of 1898, and to Africa to lasso wild game for American zoos. The hearty exuberance that he gave each task and the fortitude and physical strength he displayed belied his years. He was admired by the great men of his time for his high moral values, stamina and courage. The main character of Zane Grey's novel, The Last of the Plainsmen, is modeled on C.J. "Buffalo" Jones. This photographically illustrated, concise, very enjoyable account of his life's story is published by the Finney County Historical Society with funding from the Garden City Rotary Club.
