A concise presentation of the philosophy, history, literature, art, and ceremonies of Buddhism, by a distinguished Oriental scholar. Generous quotations from the poetry and prose of Buddhist literature enrich reader_s understanding of this religion, and its far-flung influence.
When I was searching for a book to read about Buddhism, I had two criteria: 1) I didn't want a book that was written to proselyte me into the faith; and 2) I didn't want a book that sounded like a stuffy history professor trying to impress his peers with big words and undecipherable sentences. This book met my two criteria. Mr. Chen is a Buddhist and believes in his religion; however, he is able to set his emotional attachments aside and give a concise, no nonsense sketch of Buddhism's history, doctrines, etc.. His writing is easy to read and doesn't get bogged down with uninteresting details. I recommend this book to anyone who likes their information served straight!
