A surprisingly well-plotted book

I actually received this book from a friend who threw it down in disgust, so you are warned that not every reader will love it. My friend complained that she was annoyed by the writing style, and I think she must have meant the fact that "Mary Napier" is obviously not a native speaker of English. However, the book for the most part reads well. It is a romance more than a mystery story, and after a rather sleepy beginning it becomes an action-packed adventure. So -- my friend missed out by throwing it aside to soon. When I got to the second half, I couldn't put it down.
