An excellent reference source for Jujitsu students of any system or style.

I know a lot of traditional martial artists hate the late Bruce Tegner, but many of his books provided an excellent introduction for new students without the mystical mumbo jumbo found in other books. In my opinion, this is one of his better books because it includes a fantastic introduction to the art of Jujitsu. I would not say you can learn the techniques from merely reading this book, but when used in combination with training under a competent Jujitsu instructor, it can serve as a good basic guide. Unlike many other Jujitsu books which focuses on one particular system, this volume shows a wide variety of pure Jujitsu techniques taken from numerous Budo systems. Rating: 5 Stars Joseph J. Truncale (Author: Bushi Satori Ryu Official Jujitsu Manual, Shotokan Karate Self-Defense Techniques: Street Combat Techniques, Martial Art Myths, Season of the Warrior, Never Trust a Politician, Monadnock Defensive Tactics System, PR-24 Police Baton Advanced Techniques).

A Great Book with the Fundamentals

This book is all that it states, "Jujitsu". The book has been in circulation now for about 50 years. It was published in the late 60s. It is a book that is in a very clear form with the solid basics that are in jujitsu. What is is: good solid jujitsu with the majority of the techniques containing the basic's - the ones that work. What it is not: overly complex moves or a lot of theory. Overall a good solid book.

Great Book On JuJitsu

I own a small collection of books on Jujitsu, and this book by Tegner compares favorably with all of them. If you are serious about the martial art, you should have this book in your collection. If you have only a casual interest, this may be the only book you need. Some of the Tegner book reviews border on slander. Despite what one reviewer said about Bruce Tegner's books being unrealistic movie-style examples of the martial arts -- quite the opposite is true. Tegner spent his life debunking the nonsense surrounding the Asian martial arts, and he suffered for it. Most of his books contain cautionary notes warning his readers not to be taken-in by choreographed martial arts scenes in the movies. He also dispelled the myth of the black belt as some sort of superman-killing machine. Similarly, he debunked the idea that one must embrace ancient traditions and mystical teachings in order to learn these skills (hence, the angry review about lack of "theory"). As for ethics, Tegner always cautioned that excessive force should not be used. He often omitted dangerous moves from his books and emphasized safety. His books were commonly found in school libraries when I was growing-up (60s). If you are looking for a book on self-defense you can't go wrong with "Bruce Tegner's Complete Book of Self-Defense." For that book, Tegner chose a handful of simple striking and grappling techniques from the jujitsu repertoire which are practical for the average person to apply in ordinary self-defense situations. A good companion volume to his self-defense book is "Self-Defense Nerve Centers & Pressure Points" by Bruce Tegner. As for this book, Tegner says it best, "The katas in this book have been selected from a number of old-style jujitsu methods...Much of the material has been modified to provide an activity that is appropriate for recreation, health and fitness, eye-hand-body coordination and self-improvement through physical self-expression."

Grate reference book.

I recommend this book for anyone who just wants to find out how to perform a specific technique, and doesn't want to read a long example, or anyone who just wants to brush up on his or her Jiu-Jitsu. I find that I can lookup what I need in just a mater of seconds, without having to read a long example that is not related to the, specific grip, hold, technique etc. that I want to learn.I'd recommend this book for teaching purposes, as well as learning on your own.

Awesome

Bruce Tegner's Self-defence books are very accurate and valuable. It's a good way to learn basic self-defence without practicing a martial art for thirty years.
