Chandal and Justin Knight unknowingly move in with two aged sisters who conceal the presence of an evil, immortal force This description may be from another edition of this product.
I lived on this block for many years and I knew the old brownstone and saw the old women (whom he sprang his characters from) sitting on the stoop for many years until they both finally died and they gutted the building and made it into expensive rental duplexes. You can rent it now for $10k a month. It is a great creepy, gothic thriller and had excellent characters based on a few very recognizable neighbors as well. I think Ken Eulo lived in my building or the one next door. I recommend it. I still have my 1982 paperback.
Like Rosemary's Baby but scarier

Great neoGothic novel

I read this about 20 years ago, when it was still in hardcover, and I thought it was great. Eulo presents evil building like a crescendo. The two sisters living in the decaying brownstone are creepy, and that Justin falls under their spell and drags his wife into this demonic morass is terrifying. This novel has the makings of an unbelievably great movie--think about a developer or managing agent wanting to buy a block of brownstones and turn them into coops--and this one representing the Gate of Hell is among them. Eulo's ability to describe the sinister is outstanding. Now that I live in NYC, whenever I walk by the brownstones on my block I think of his novel. I'm looking forward to a second read of this soon.
A real good one !

If you want a spooky, dark, old-fashioned horror novel, this is one is for you ! Eulo knows how to built up a chilling story to an edge-of-your-seat conclusion that will certainly give you goosebumps. Totally enjoyable !------------M. Boucher
