Brothers could sure spare the time

The Autry-isms in this mostly-true memoir are rampant and somewhat unforgettable. From a wacko funeral description to the poignance of sister Maggie's death, we're taken on a family's journey in eastern North Carolina where tenant farmers are hurled into world events. First you're laughing at the thought of a guy getting a mule drunk, then saddened at the vivid picture of the Red Cross lady's arrival with bad war news. A definite plus plug for this book is the fact that one needn't read it in chronological order - open it ro ANY chapter, you'll be amused, enlightened, entertained and have a deeper appreciation of a father's influence to "do what's right".

Brothers - a review

Even though I didn't grow up in the South I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It gives a great account of what it was like to grow up poor in the South in the 30's, 40's and 50's. It is also a great testament to the power of postive family values to shape the lives of young people in positive way. Finally, the book affirms that even though poor, a family need not be without the wealth bestowed by love, joy and spiritual strengh. I'll read this book again and again over the years; I'm getting it for all the members of my family and several of my friends. Read "Brothers," you won't be disappointed.

A True Family Story

Brothers is a wonderful story of a family in the post depression south. It is about the love a mother and father, a commitment to education and a remembrance of those who taught understanding and family loyalty. I thoroughly enjoyed reading the book from start to finish!
