Worth reading

I liked that I never knew what was going to happen next. The author did a fine job of balancing the suspense with interesting and complex characters. If you can put up with a bit of gore (or skip it if you get squemish), then you will enjoy the fight scenes. I recommend this for fantasy/sci-fi readers who enjoy good and bad (mostly bad) aliens living in our today society.

New Occult Investigator from the creator of Teddy London

Brooklyn Knight is the first in a new series from C.J. Henderson, author of the best occult detective fiction bar none. His Teddy London series was a high water mark for this particular sub-genre. Such fiction is usually seen as little more than high-spirited fun, but Henderson has imbued it with a deeper spiritual and existential dimension. Professor Piers Knight, described on the cover copy as New York's Indiana Jones, is the curator of the Brooklyn Museum. Lovecraft once said that setting is the key to effective horror, and the Brooklyn Museum and environs provide a fitting backdrop for Knight's adventures. The actual Brooklyn Museum houses a vast treasure trove of antiquities, and is comparable to anything on "Museum Row" on Fifth Avenue in Manhattan's Upper East Side. (New York and Brooklyn were originally twin cities.) Though known as an expert on antiquities, Prof. Knight is also well schooled in all things occult. Though not a practicing sorcerer, he is well able to utilize mystical artifacts for defensive applications. Since most of humanity is blissfully ignorant of such matters, it falls to Knight to give battle to sinister occult forces that encroach upon humanity. The agents of society's lawful authorities are constrained by a rational worldview in which supernatural manifestations simply don't fit. This hinders Knight's ability to recruit allies, since the latter are invariably overwhelmed by shock and disorientation similar to that experienced by those initially exposed to the true nature of the Matrix. Thus the struggle rests mainly on Knight's shoulders. The story is a fast-moving tale of supernatural menace that rockets to an appropriately apocalyptic climax. However the most intriguing element of this novel is the characterization. Henderson is adept at depicting the mindsets of people from various walks of life. He is also keenly aware of human limitations. His characters must work through and recuperate from fear, doubt, shock, physical and mental fatigue, and pain. Brooklyn Knight is now available in a popular edition from Tor. One hopes that it will bring C.J. Henderson the wider audience he has long deserved.

un pulp fiction paranormal thriller

A legend, Brooklyn Museum curator Professor Piers Knight enjoys collecting paranormal artifacts. His newest employee, summer intern Bridget Elkins is in awe and shock before she meets the mythical Professor Knight, known for finding the historical ancient lost and arcane. Dr. Ashur Ungari in panic calls from the Middle East while Professor Knight shows Manhattan Island from a different perspective than Bridget ever noticed or hace been aware exists; explaining further that Jersey on the other side of the water is insignificant and Queens is the dumping ground. However Ashur tells Knight he found the site of Memak'tori in Assad's Syria; the birthplace of civilization. However, as Ashur describes the dig in terms of future archeologists uncovering the Empire State Building, astral thieves including a fire elemental and a terrorist try to steal the mysterious Dream Stone, the heart of an incredible find. Another elemental also comes for the stone with Knight leading the counterinsurgency against the paranormal horde and their evil allies. Although the Professor never lets his hair down even when Bridget throws herself at him (blushes and nitrates are not enough) and the NuYawk accent feels forced, fans will enjoy this over the top of at least the Observation Tower of the Empire State Building. Readers will relish the fast-pace from the frantic call by Ungari to the final climax in National Historic Landmark Brooklyn's Green-Wood Cemetery as this is a fun pulp fiction paranormal thriller.
