It is many years since the cataclysmic, man-made event which drove all life from Birddom. Recovery has been slow but Nature always finds a way and now a paradise is on offer for those brave enough to make the attempt.Just such a bird is Spindle, an unhappy young heron who has lost all his family and is bullied mercilessly by others of his kind. Hearing of this far-off Eden and believing that he has nothing to lose, he sets off in search of a new home in a place he decides to call Ardea - after the first heron flock that the Creator brought to life.On arrival, he finds that everything is even better than he has been told. The large island is a beautiful and beneficent utopia with no predators and, most importantly, no sign of Man. Spindle soon settles down and makes friends with the other incomers, particularly with a distinctive white-headed blackbird called Snowcap. However, with the passage of time, the young heron realises that something is still missing in this his new life and it is the same for his best friend also. Neither has found a mate and, without one, they both understand that paradise cannot be truly complete. And so begins their most arduous adventure. For Birddom, like the original Garden of Eden, is blighted by evil. And as before in the land, in times long past, it is wickedness in avian form. Corvids again play their part, though as many of their kind choose the light as the darkness. And for those who are seduced by the glamour of evil, their role in this war is to be the soldiers and not the generals. Masterminding the chaos, with an unquenchable desire to make one race supreme over all others, are birds of Spindle's own kind. To them, perfection is not something to share but to covet. To possess. To rule. Two herons, corrupted by many forms of lust, but primarily the lust for power. However, this makes them rivals for the ultimate prize and offers a glimmer of hope for Spindle and his friend.Dangers will have to be faced and fear overcome. Alliances will have to be forged and egos subjugated to the common good. And, in the end, a battle will have to be fought. But it will be a battle of wills as much as strength, with the winner taking all and the very future of Birddom/Ardea as the prize.
