Scottish lass finds love with an English Lord

I tend to like Margo Maguire's novels and this one is no exception. Shorter than her more recent novels it still has a good story line with a truly sweet heroine. Cristiane MacDhiubh is half Scottish and English living in Scotland. The Battle of Falkirk has recently occurred and her parents have both died. She is alone and because of her English mother, not accepted by the villagers even though her father was Laird. Before she died, Cristiane's mother wrote to Adam Sutton, an English noble to ask him to take her daughter away from the hostile villagers after her death. Adam promised to do this and if he discovered that he and Cristiane suited he would consider marrying her, if not he would escort her to her grandfather's keep in England. When Adam comes for Cristiane he is surprised how terribly she is treated and appalled at her lack of finery and even shoes. He mistakenly believes she is a wild Scott, uneducated and unsophisticated, and cannot envision how she could ever fit into his world. Adam is a widower living on an Island. He believes his people would never accept Cristiane because of his own injuries at Falkirk and many men perished there from the village. Adam does need a wife though. He has a daughter who is almost non-communicative since her mother died. Cristiane loves Adam's island home and she is working miracles with his daughter but she realizes that her Scottish ancestry is a real obstacle for Adam and his villagers. She is smart to recognize that arguing with them is not a way to win over the villagers. She instead is her sweet unaffected self. She is kind and generous and I really liked this aspect of her character. She is not embittered over her fate and makes the best of her situation. How can Adam not be charmed by this almost fey woman? He fights his feelings for her but finds himself defending her against unwarranted verbal attacks. Adam's biggest fault is he scratches the surface when it comes to knowing people; this includes not only Cristiane but his daughter and other family members too. This is a fine story that has a truly likeable heroine. Many times children in romance novels can really hinder a story line by being too precocious or ill mannered but Adam's daughter strikes just the right tone for a five year old. Even though there are few romantic trysts, this couple does share a believable and passionate romance.
