I may be biased, but...

My high school teacher wrote this book. Now, I haven't seen any other Spanish textbooks, but I have had other teachers and I definately prefer John Conner. His teaching method -- tell us how to say what we want to say with acceptable grammar, rather than say predetermined things with impeccable formal grammar -- is wonderful, and it is carried over into his book. This textbook is not a phrase book, it shows you how to construct your own sentences, something no other spanish teacher (and I've had quite a few) has done for me. In short, this is a wonderful book, and I think it would be great for someone trying to learn spanish on their own.
