Brain Powered Vol. 1

My friend gave me this book, and it's excellent. This first installment is shrouded in mystery, you don't know what Orphans agenda is (an evil group of scientists who have a secret underwater base), why there are catastrophic weather conditions all over the world, and why these organic plates keep popping up out of the ground and hatching into sentient mechs, or why Orphan is retrieving them. It's still very interesting, and I am definitely going to buy the rest of the set to see where the story goes.

very nice art!

if you've read my review for DNAngel book 1 then you know i love yukiru sugisaki's art very much. she is a very talented artist and i can't wait for more of her work to be translated. brain powered is a very interesting series from the start. the 'mecha' (they aren't machines, they just look like them) are remenicent to the ones in raxephon or the evas in evangelion. i really like the series so far, and i am sure many others feel the same. the art is absolutely stunning!

lovely

This manga was lovely drawn. I mostly only like girls manga but I was interested in this because the illustrator is the same person who did DNAngel. The style and the mood of this manga is much more serious than DNAngel. While there is also a love story charactors seem more interested in saving/destroying the world. Emotion is a huge theme in this manga where the mechs are driven by human emotion. I found this interesting perhaps only because I am not more familiar with this genre. The charactor design is excellent all of the charactors are unique and apearances enhance the portrayal of their personality. The pacing and panel arangement are pretty good. Nothing exceptionaly innovative but still varying enough to keep excitement and flow of the story. There aren't many authors notes but there is a really nice bonus at the end whith some charactor design notes and sketches.

Brain Powered is definitely interesting...

I had heard that this was a little like Gundam, a little like Five Star Stories(Which is the best manga I've ever read in English, by the way), and a little bit Escaflowne. All I have to say to that rumor is...no, it isn't. This is very different. The Brain Powereds and Grand Chers are sentient beings, not machines. Their partners do not control them, but merely help guide them. And they cannot change into other things, like a certain robot that can become a dragon.Anyway, this is a very good series. I like the plot, and the characters are different. But this is not one of my favorites.
